Brazil creates largest air freight merger

The merger of two Brazilian freight operators, TWO Aviation and Flex Aero, will provide express freight service for critical functions, such as factory lines and currency transport for banks, through the use of small and medium-sized aircraft, the Shipping Gazette informs.
The two carriers combined bring strength from the north in Flex Aero's operations and the centre and south of Brazil in TWO's network to command an overall claim of the market at 60 per cent, reported Aviation International News, of Midland Park, New Jersey.
The new carrier, Two-Flex, will be offer a wider network with 18 aircraft and 11 bases, operating from its main hub of Jundai Airport in Sao Paulo state, said Flex Aero president Rui Aquino, adding that it will plug a gap created by shrinking passenger capacity that has reduced space for packages.
"The airlines and regional carriers serve only 130 of Brazil's more than 5,500 municipalities, and Two-Flex will be an alternative," said Mr Aquino.
Its fleet will include 18 Cessna Grand Caravans, of which each carrier will contribute nine, with a view to acquiring 12 more by year-end and two ATR twin-turboprops to increase annual tonnage from 7,500 to 10,000 tonnes.
The Grand Caravan, built with FedEx's specifications as a low-cost cargo aircraft, is well suited to Brazil's short, unpaved runways.
The new freight company Two-flex has the added benefit of holding necessary permits from tax and aviation authorities which is rare for the Brazilian market.
