Icelandair Ground Services (IGS) has commissioned Lufthansa Consulting to upgrade its catering facility at Keflavik International Airport (KEF) in Iceland in order to meet the growth in air passenger and aircraft movements by Icelandair and other airlines. One important aim of the project is to articulate a clear understanding of the need to develop the catering kitchen facility so that it can meet the demand for a full range of catering activities.
Following the project kick-off in Reykjavik, the aviation experts assessed and improved the current processes. In line with international industry best practices, the consultants defined enhanced catering and logistics processes and planned space requirements for all production and logistic areas. Optimized process
flows tailored to the needs of IGS will ensure the efficient, practical utilization and management of the facility. Furthermore, Lufthansa Consulting’s recommendations included layout improvements to expand facility areas where required.
Construction work took place during the winter season when traffic volumes are generally lower. This enabled IGS to carry out “business-as-usual” during the facility improvements.
IGS is a 100% subsidiary of the Icelandair Group and provides, in addition to general aircraft ground handling services, a complete range of aviation catering services – from inflight meals for airlines to restaurants and bars in the airport terminal. The ground handling business is growing along with the increasing number of passengers and aircraft at KEF. Besides their main client Icelandair the company also carries out ground handling services for other airlines.
During the past decade Lufthansa Consulting experts have planned and optimized ground handling processes and logistics for international airport clients in Europe,
Russia, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. “We are very pleased to have the expertise of Lufthansa Consulting on board for this significant project," says Gunnar S. Olsen, Managing Director of Icelandair Ground Services.
“We can foresee that our business is developing beyond our current facility capacity. The upgrade will ensure that IGS can continue to provide efficient services for our clients in the future”.
