Hong Kong air cargo up 4.5pc in April while air traffic rises 5pc

Cargo throughput at Hong Kong International Airport increased 4.5 per cent to 342,000 tonnes in April compared to the same month last year mainly due to the five per cent year-on-year growth in exports.
The Airport Authority (AA) said that during the month, cargo throughput to and from Southeast Asia and Taiwan outperformed other key regions. In the first four months of the year, the airport handled 1.28 million tonnes of cargo representing a year-on-year growth of 2.2 per cent. On a rolling 12-month basis, cargo volume went up 3.4 per cent to 4.5 million tonnes.
In April, passenger trips and air traffic movements rose 1.1 per cent and 5.1 per cent year-on-year to 4.9 million and 30,530 respectively.
The AA said that for the first four months of the year, the airport handled 19.2 million passengers and 119,025 flight movements, representing year-on-year growth of 4.1 per cent and 4.2 per cent.
Visitor arrival was the main driver behind the growth in passenger traffic, with a seven per cent increase on the same month in 2012. Routes to and from the mainland and Southeast Asia performed particularly well.
The authority's CEO Stanley Hui said to meet the increasing demand for the medium term, six new parking stands will become operational by next month, and another 15 will be available by year's end.
On a rolling 12-month basis, the airport's passenger throughput rose 3.5 per cent to 57.2 million while aircraft movements went up 4.7 per cent to 356,475.
