Terex Port Solutions posts large order for rubber-tyred gantry cranes

Terex Port Solutions (TPS) has received the largest order for rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) in the history of the company. Beginning April 2014, TPS will hand over 26 cranes to Malaysian terminal operator Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn. Bhd. (PTP) for use in the port of Pelabuhan. The order also includes an option to order an additional 32 cranes, which are manufactured at TPS’ location in Xiamen, China. The machines will be configured as E-RTGs–powered externally by electricity supplied through a busbar system.

The cranes will service two new quays
PTP ordered the new rubber-tyred cranes in connection with the comprehensive expansion of its terminal, which is the largest container terminal in Malaysia. They will be used on the two new quays that are under construction and will stretch 720 m when they are opened in May 2014. The cranes can stack standard containers 1-over-5, service seven container rows, plus a loading andunloading lane, and have an under-spreader lifting capacity of 50 t. High handling performance is achieved through gantry speeds of up to 136 m/min and trolley speeds of up to 70 m/min. Power for the cranes is supplied direct from the harbour mains along busbar systems, which means that the gantries do not generate any exhaust emissions in the terminal and feature low noise levels. Using an external power supply reduces operating and energy costssignificantly compared with conventional diesel-electric machines. To allow the cranes to travel independently, for example, for maintenance purposes, each crane also has an auxiliary diesel generator.

Performance, quality and environmentally friendly operation are crucial aspects
In opting for machines from Terex Port Solutions, PTP selected technology that is designed to meet the performance and quality requirements of this rapidly expanding terminal, as confirmed by Glen Hilton, CEO of PelabuhanTanjungPelepasSdn. Bhd.: “The rubber-tyredgantry cranes made by Terex Port Solutions are recognised in the market as being high-performance, robust machines that also considerablycut costs in both operation and maintenance.” In purchasing these new cranes, PTP is putting a clearly defined strategy into practice, continues Glen Hilton: “By expanding our terminal we aim to increase container-handling volumes by a further 25 percent and the new cranes will play a key role in this context.”

Foothold in the Southeast Asia growth market strengthened
In the eyes of Maurizio Altieri, General Manager of TPS Xiamen, the fact that PTP has opted for Terex Port Solutions for an investment of this magnitude and importance is particularly satisfying: “In PTP we have gained a customer thathas established itselfas a leading player at one of the world’s most crucial maritime trading locations within a very short time, and now intends to build on that using our technology.” A considerable order of this size helps strengthen Terex Port Solutions’ position in SoutheastAsia for the future, he explained: “For us, this order from PTP is a further marker in one of the most important growth markets in the world.”

Full range of products in the field of gantry stacking cranes
In terms of gantry stacking cranes, Terex Port Solutions has a broad range of suitable products. As well as rubber-tyredgantries, the company offersrail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs). Among the rail-mounted machines, customers can choose automated stacking cranes (ASCs) that have been developed for fully automated use. In this segment, too, Terex Port Solutions is able to supply the right handling machines for any terminal size – whether manual, semi-automated or fully automated solutions.
