Yibin ports' container volume surges nearly 200pc

Yibin, a river port in Sichuan province, handled 15,857 TEU this year on May 19, accounting for 31.7 per cent of its yearly target and soaring nearly 200 per cent compared to the same period in 2012, according to the Shipping Gazette.
The port manages to achieve a strong growth in dry season when a 3,000-tonne ship can only carry 2,000 tonnes of cargo. The port attributed this to its effort in promoting the use of containers for bulk cargo shipment.
An unnamed manager from a wine company said they have succeeded in reducing their damage rate to zero and in lowering the cost after shifting to container shipping.
In the coming rainy season, the port's weekly callings will be increased by two or three sailings to a total number of five or six, according to Huang Xuebing, the manager of Yibin Port Company.
Meanwhile, the port's oversized cargo throughput increased 63.5 per cent to 79.84 million tonnes, thanks to its effort in attracting cargo from neighbouring hinterland regions.
But the port said they are still far from their full year target of five to six million TEU.
The port company said they will continue to seek more cargo volume from the hinterland regions and speed up the setup of bonded logistics facilities as well as the construction of berths for bulk and oversized cargo.
