China Railway Corporation to improve rail freight services

Three months have passed since China disbanded its Ministry of Railways and replaced it with the new China Railway Corporation to make the rail freight sector more market-oriented, Xinhua reports.
The China Railway Corporation has now announced measures will be taken nation-wide this month to improve rail freight services and enhance adding more capacity and lowering prices in preparation of throwing itself into competition with the logistics sector.
In the past, customers not only had to apply for use of rail cars, report their monthly plans, but also have to find relevant railway departments to have their cargo collected, which proved cumbersome and complex.
Now, customers need only pick up the phone or a click a computer to have the rail operator collect freight and deliver it door to door, according to the report.
Cheng Xiandong, director of the Transport Bureau under the China Railway Corporation, said the reform measures focus on changing the way freight is collected, simplifying procedures, opening more channels for collection without delays, devising transport plans and deliveries. Another major focus is standardising pricing and developing door-to-door all-in rates.
Mr Cheng said the railway cargo service mainly covers full-train and full car transport, express delivery, container shipping, outsized cargo handling, consolidation as well as same-day or next-morning delivery.
China Railway Corporation promises to enhance service quality and welcomes criticism from the customers, said Mr Cheng.
