Chengdu Airport cargo throughput surges 33.7pc

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport posted 33.7 per cent increase in international shipments from January to May year on year, but no tonnage figures were given, Xinhua reports.
Chengdu airport handled 500,000 tonnes of freight and over 30 million passengers last year.
The airport operates 27 direct international cargo routes covering Europe, Middle East and North America. Its international air freight volume ranks among the top airport in central and western China, according to Sichuan Province Airport Group.
By 2015, Chengdu airport's cargo throughput is expected to hit 650,000 tonnes, breaking into the list of the top 40 airports in the world, said Sichuan Province Airport Group deputy director Li Minghua.
The increase of international cargo services is attracting more of the cargo carriers to launch more service from the airport, further widening its network. Mr Li said Chengdu is located in the middle of the air route from Europe to Asia, and is best place of transit for cargo flying from China and southeast Asia to Europe and Middle East.
As market conditions grow more favorable for the Chengdu, the airport's potential is increasing, especially with the cheap fuel policy that reduces carrier operating costs.
