The latest figures posted by Shenzhen airport show that express delivery packages have become the major contributor to the airport's cargo throughput, which took up more than 50 per cent of the airport's freight volume.
Xinhua reported the figures indicate that Shenzhen airport's strategy of developing itself into an express parcels distribution hub is taking effect.
In the first half, the airport handled 430,000 tonnes, up 8 per cent year on year, much faster than the average 2.4 per cent growth rates at China's top 10 airports, and the national average of three per cent.
Shenzhen airport said the increase of the airport's express cargo throughput is a result of the fast development of China's express industry and Shenzhen's status as the fast growing cities in the country in term of express industry.
In the first half of 2013, Shenzhen recorded the second largest sum of express industry revenue in China just following Shanghai. The city is estimated to be able to handle 470 million pieces of express parcels for full year this year. Express industry revenues are expected to increase 33 per cent to CNY12 billion (CNY 1.96 million).
