United Airlines to fly thrice weekly to Chengdu

United Airlines is seeking permission from the US Department of Transportation to start non-stop Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner service from its San Francisco hub to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province in southwest China from next June.
As mainland China's fourth largest city, with a population of 14 million in the urban area, more than two hundred Fortune 500 companies have a presence in Chengdu.
The airline plans to operate a thrice weekly service to Chengdu using the Dreamliner, and expects to take delivery of one more Dreamliner from Boeing by the end of 2013. It has an additional 57 of this aircraft model on order, said a company statement.
If approved, Chengdu will be the ninth destination United serves in the Asia-Pacific region non-stop from San Francisco, from where it provides access to 300 destinations worldwide on five continents.
The proposed flights would depart San Francisco at 1335 hrs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and arrive at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport at 1850 hrs the following day (local time). Service from Chengdu will depart at 1000 hrs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and arrive at San Francisco at 0850 hrs the same day.
The new route will leverage a codeshare arrangement United has in place with fellow Star Alliance member Air China, which offers flights to 59 cities from Chengdu, many of which will offer same-day connections to the US airline's new Chengdu service.
