Incheon Airport to increase passenger handling capacity 41 per cent by 2017

Incheon Airport has started a US$4.6 billion expansion to increase passenger handling capacity 41 per cent by 2017, in time for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea's Pyeongchang county.
It recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the construction start of its second passenger terminal that will bring capacity to 62 million.
While principally focused on passengers, the expansion includes increasing annual cargo capacity to 5.8 million tonnes from 4.5 million, Reuters reports.
The expansion is also a bid to become the major Asian aviation hub, hotly contested by Singapore and Hong Kong, which is expanding to capitalise on increased traffic in Asia.
Hong Kong International Airport, which expects passenger numbers to rise from 56.5 million people in 2012 to 102 million by 2030, is working on a third runway and expanded terminal facilities.
Incheon, which ranks ninth in international passenger traffic well behind top performing Singapore, is second in cargo to Hong Kong.
Incheon Airport has seen annual passenger traffic grow more than six per cent since it opened in 2001, accorfing to the Shipping Gazette.
