DB Schenker Rail UK welcomes progress on HS2

  20.03.2014

DB Schenker Rail UK welcomes the publication of Sir David Higgins' HS2 Plus report as a positive next step for the project.
DB Schenker Rail UK strongly supports HS2. The capacity released on the UK rail network by HS2 is critical for continuing the growth of rail freight and transferring freight from road to rail. The new route itself offers potential for some future freight movements.
The HS2 Plus report addresses many of the concerns previously voiced by DB Schenker Rail UK about the detail of the proposals for HS2.
DB Schenker Rail UK agrees with the recommendation not to proceed with the current plan for a connection between HS1 and HS2. Although such a connection is strategically important and necessary, the current proposals would have too severe an impact on existing and planned freight services across London.
Accelerating the delivery of Phase 2 to Crewe will also help to relieve capacity constraints for freight on the West Coast Main Line and we support this recommendation.
Geoff Spencer, CEO of DB Schenker Rail UK, said: "This report is an important step forward. HS2, with proper integration to the UK rail network, is vital for the UK's continued economic development. Further growth in rail freight using the released capacity will help drive significant benefit across the UK. We are pleased some of our key concerns have been listened to and we look forward to continuing to work with Sir David Higgins on this key project."
