United Parcel Service (UPS) has announced that its chief operating officer David Abney, 58, will become CEO on September 1, replacing Scott Davis, 62, who retains the office of non-executive chairman.

As COO, his area was logistics, sustainability and engineering, making investments in alternative fuel fleets, and implementing programmes to expand freight volume across more than 200 countries.
Of his successor, Mr Davis said: "His capability to anticipate global trends, identify risks, and guide the company and our clients to capitalise on opportunities has proven invaluable."
A Mississippi native, Mr Abney has a BBA from Delta State University. He is a director of Airlines for America, the Coalition of Service Industries and chairman of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta.
An Oregon native, Mr Davis joined UPS in 1986 when UPS acquired the technology company II Morrow, where he was CEO. The served in finance and accounting before becoming CFO in 2001 and CEO in 2008.
