New logistics center featuring Siemens rail technology opens in Turkey

Turkey's state rail company (Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryolları, TCDD) has commenced operations at its Hasanbey logistics center in the north-west of Turkey, a rail-based facility covering an area of some 540,000 square meters. Siemens supplied all the signal and telecommunications systems. The new logistics center is designed to handle a throughput of 1.4 million tonnes of freight p.a. and boasts some 20,000 meters of transshipment tracks and a loading/unloading zone of around 6500 meters.
The order, which was awarded in 2012, covers the supply, installation and commissioning of the signal systems, electronic signal boxes, the train detection system, the LED signals and electrical switch mechanisms. Siemens likewise delivered the energy and distribution systems and the uninterruptible power supply equipment.
Turkey's location at the interface between Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East makes it particularly attractive as a regional hub for transport and logistics. Up to the year 2023, this nation at the strategically important transportation crossroads between Europe and Asia is set to invest around 30 billion euros in the expansion of its ports, waterways, roads, railways and airports. The rail system, with a current share of total traffic of just 0.85 percent, will here take on an important role, as eleven logistics centers modeled on Hasanbey are set to commence operations by 2023.
