DB Schenker, OHS and Qatar Airways Cargo provide first class service for 53 showjumping horses

In close cooperation with Qatar Airways Cargo, Overseas Horse Services (OHS) and Liege Airport, DB Schenker made sure that 53 showjumping horses traveled safely non-stop aboard a Boeing 777 F from Calgary in Canada to Liege in Belgium. The aircraft which landed at Liege Airport in the morning of July 15, 2014, also carried eleven tons of equipment, nine animal care staff and three dogs. The horses will take part in the World Equestrian Games (WEG) from 23 August to 7 September 2014 in Normandy.
They were loaded in 22 double stables and three triple stables. These stables came with regular flights from Amsterdam and Doha via Chicago, from where they were trucked to Calgary. Load planning and stabling was coordinated and watched over by DB Schenker experts. Equipment was installed on ten lower deck pallets. Experts from DB Schenker’s subsidiary Karpeles Freight Services, Inc were responsible for the ad hoc charter.
The horses came from a tournament at the Spruce Meadows Summer Series which ended in the late afternoon of July 13, and were brought gradually to Calgary airport and loaded in their stables.
Most of the horses belong Eric Lamaze, a Canadian equestrian rider, and Kent Farrington, a USA equestrian rider. Both of them will compete for their countries at the WEG in Normandy in August. Europe is the final destination for the horses.
The transport of these horses required an airport equipped with an indoor Border Inspection Post which enabled the horse-boxes to be lined up for their flights making the veterinary inspection of the horses easier and quicker while ensuring maximum comfort. The Flyin’ Farm at Liege Airport therefore reaffirms its efficiency and establishes itself as the first entry point into Europe for animal products and all types of live animals.
