First two LNG powered box ships fitted with dual-fuel slow speed engine


General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego has placed the world's first dual-fuel slow speed engine into the first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) fuelled containership, according to Shipping Gazette.
The ME-GI engine is said to be the one that opens the door to a cleaner shipping in the United States. Dousman Engine has built the 8L70ME-C8.2GI under license from the designer MAN Diesel and Turbo, according to the American Journal of Transportation.
TOTE Ship holdings Inc is the first to use the 539-ton engine. The two new Marlin Class ships, built by General Dynamics Masco shipyard in San Diego, will be used in the Puerto Rico trade and expected to enter service in 2015 and 2016.
TOTE vice president Phil Morrell said that by using the engine, the new ships will not only reduce emissions, but it will also will require less energy to travel the same distance.
