Stadler to deliver additional 34 FLIRT trains for Helsinki Regional Transport
Finland-based Junakalusto Oy has placed an additional order worth €200m for 34 FLIRT trains from Stadler Rail, according to Railway Technology. The rolling-stock leasing company has ordered these trains for Helsinki Regional Transport (HRT), Finland. The latest order is the second option in the original contract signed in 2006. The new trains will be a uniform fleet and are almost similar to the previous FLIRT trains delivered by Stadler, with small changes in the interior layout and the passenger information system. Under the first option of the contract, the company has already delivered 32 trains and the remaining nine will be delivered in November. Junakalusto Oy managing director Yrjö Judström said: "The uniform train fleet now allows an excellent starting point for putting the train traffic out for tender from the start of 2018." Stadler designed the FLIRTs for HRT with small changes from the normal-gauge FLIRT to meet the severe climatic conditions in Finland. The trains will have triple-glazed windows and the insulation is increased from 50% to 100% to improve tolerance. The air-conditioning system will have a heat recovery system and the heaters have been installed in the door areas to maintain the temperature. Delivery of the trains is scheduled between early 2016 and mid-2017 and this order will increase the number of Stadler Rail's FLIRT trains ordered across the globe to 1,018. Stadler Rail Group owner and CEO Peter Spuhler said: "It gives me immense pleasure that the 1,000th FLIRT train will travel in Helsinki, because from now on this customer will be operating 75 Stadler trains already." The four-carriage trains will have 234 seats and other features include 80% low-flooring level, accessible toilets, a multifunctional area for wheelchairs, prams or bicycles, a 3.2m-wide carriage, 11 flat-screens to provide information and six emergency contact points. With a maximum speed of 160km/h, the trains will be operated using the Finnish EBICAB train control system initially.
