Service linking Bilbao, Portsmouth and Zeebrugge will end January 1

Dutch shortsea operator Transfennica has told customers its service linking Bilbao, Portsmouth and Zeebrugge will end January 1 because of costs imposed by low-sulphur fuel rule covering the English Channel and North and Baltic seas.
"Due to the sulphur emission legislation on January 1, which will result in increasing fuel costs 50 per cent, trailer volumes will return to the road and an important container volume will shift to rail," Transfennica told customers last week.
"We therefore had to conclude that there is no profitable future for a ro-ro service and have no option other than to take this tough decision and close the service," said the advisory.
The company said the decision would have no impact on other Transfennica routes or on the activities of Transfennica Logistics.
