Iranian shipping line IRISL recommences container shipping to Europe


The Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) has recommenced services to Europe, after five years of suspension due to the international sanctions, reports the Maritime News Journal of Varna, Bulgaria.
The company's first containership on the run has already started the its voyage transporting petrochemical products to Germany.
The Iranian ships were banned from operations in European and US ports for last five years, following the international sanctions.
After lifting them, several European shipping companies started voyages to Iran to establish a regular container service in the country's ports.
Now IRISL has restarted shipping services between Iran and Europe on weekly schedule, but in a few months plan to expand calls to South and North America with 6,000-TEU ships.
"IRISL restarted regular voyages between Iran and Europe on weekly basis," said IRISL director general Mohammad Saeedi.
"We plan to establish a joint alliance with European carriers for transportation of northern and southern ports," said Mr Saeedi.
"Moreover, we will start regular services on routes between port of Bandar Abbas and ports in South and North America", he said.
IRISL operates a fleet of 160 vessels, including 12,000-TEUers. The company plans purchasing of new container fleet with a capacity of 500,000 TEU by 2021.
