New Istanbul airport to handle 5.5 million tonnes annually

Istanbul's US$11 billion airport is still under construction and 25 per cent complete despite opposition from environmentalists.
The project is part of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's ambitious infrastructure development project that he hopes will bolster his nation's position in regional and global markets.
And with cargo volumes growing at an impressive rate over the last decade, increased air connectivity is central to this plan, reported New York's Air Cargo World.
During the first phase of construction, a cargo and logistics centre is being developed over an area of 1.4 million square metres, with an annual capacity to handle up to 5.5 million tonnes of cargo. The facility will be large enough for 30 widebody freighters to park simultaneously.
In March 2015, DHL signed a memorandum of understanding to take over 200,000 square metres to offer express cargo services at the airport.
