The new INR12.7 billion (US$197 million) container terminal at Ennore Port, also known as Kamarajar Port on the northern edge of Chennai that is owned by the Adani Group is slated to commence operations within a month.
The new terminal will open with an initial annual handling capacity of 800,000 TEU and a quay length of 400 metres. This will be extended to 730 metres and a capacity of 1.4 million TEU upon its completion when it will provide an alternative facility for handling cargo outside of the nearby port of Chennai, reported London's Container Management.
Port managing director MA Bhaskarachar said the new facility was developed to raise port capacity to 86 million tonnes. The expansion project also includes the construction of a new multi-cargo terminal, which is slated to start operations soon, with Chettinad International Bulk Terminal Pvt Ltd.
