Port of Oakland's May import volumes increase 1.4pc

The Port of Oakland handled 82,440 TEU of imports in May, representing a year-on-year increase of 1.4 per cent.
The May total was the port's highest import volume since August 2015, when the port handled 82,492 TEU of imports, reported American Shipper.
Imports account for 48 per cent of containers shipped through the port. "Our import volume has been up four consecutive months," said Port of Oakland maritime director John Driscoll. "That's encouraging as we head into the traditionally busy summer-fall peak season."
Overall volume, including imports, exports and empty containers, were up 2.2 per cent during the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2016.
While the number of vessels calling fell seven per cent, container volume rises up because ship sizes have increased to 14,000 TEU.
Seventy-six per cent of the Oakland's trade is with Asia, while the other 13 per cent is with Europe, five per cent with Australia and Oceania, and another five per cent with other foreign economies.
