Damietta cargo volume falls 3.2pc in April

The port of Damietta in Egypt handled 2.8 million tonnes of cargo in April, representing a decline of 3.2 per cent compared to the same month a year earlier, according to data published by the Damietta Port Authority (DPA). However, container throughput measured in TEU rose by 5.5 per cent in April, year on year.
General cargo export volumes rose by 65 per cent in April, compared to the same month in 2016, to reach 558,300 tonnes, on the back of an increase in the volume of exported methanol and fertilisers, reported Egypt's Daily News.
The DPA revealed that the number of vessels calling at the port during 2016 rose by eight per cent compared to 2015 to stand at 2,562. Port authorities attributed the increase to the number of dry bulk ships visiting the port rising by 46 per cent to total 690 ships in 2016.
In April 2017, the number of vessels docking at the port stood at 229 just one less than in April 20.
