Vienna Airport expands cargo unit, opens cold storage pharma hub

Vienna Airport has expanded its cargo centre by opening a new temperature-controlled pharma hub, reports London's Air Cargo News.
The EUR17.9 million (US$21.2 million) investment includes a new pharma handling centre of 1,600-square metres, part of a recently enlarged cargo facility.
The EUR1.9 million pharma site includes a cold storage area of 153 square metres with two above to minus eight Celsius while another 1,415 square metres of the cold storage offers a range of 15 above to minus 25 Celsius.
DHL is also planning to set up a 60,000-square metres logistics centre at the site, creating 500 new jobs.
Said DHL director Julian Jager: "Our market position as an air cargo transshipment hub will be further strengthened thanks to the expansion of the air cargo centre."
Major cargo markets, including transpacific, Europe, India and Asia Pacific, remain 'robust" ahead of an anticipated spike in perishables shipments in December, said Cathay Pacific general manager for cargo service delivery Frosti Lau, reported London's Air Cargo News.
Said Mr Lau: "What is even ahead of anticipated increases in perishable shipments of fruit coming into season - especially cherries - and the launch of our Christchurch [New Zealand] route in December."
E-commerce volumes were pushed up by another record setting Singles? Day in China, similar to Black Friday in the US, he said.
