IMO seeks more spending, more rules to counter global warming

The UN agency, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), is urging member states to spend more and impose more unfunded mandates to counter global warming.
IMO secretary general Kitack Lim has urged member states to set bold and ambitious goals for "reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from international shipping in 2018," reports London's Tanker Operator.
Speaking at the IMO session last week, Mr Lim said: "I urge you, be bold; set ambitious goals that really will make a difference. Make the most of it."
"The IMO's seven directions point to more rule-making and implementation to increase ship safety, autonomous vessels, all contribute to combat climate change," he said.
Mr Lim said he sought to make the IMO a "knowledge based organisation" to support rule making and enhance implementation.
