PANYNJ January up 13.2pc to record 585,864 TEU, laden imports up 18.5pc


Container throughput was up 13.2 per cent year on year to a record 585,864 TEU in January in New York Harbour, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ).
The January cargo volumes were also the fifth highest of any month in port history, revealed PANYNJ statistics, reported American Shipper.
Laden imports increased 18.5 per cent to 309,003 TEU for the month year on year while laden exports upticked 1.7 per cent to 112,839 TEU.
Throughput of empty export containers rose 12.4 per cent year on year to 162,070 TEU, and empty imports climbed 7.9 per cent to 1,898 TEU.
ExpressRail, the port authority's dockside rail system serving New York and New Jersey marine terminals, increased volumes 19.8 per cent to 50,303 containers.
In addition to container cargo, the port posted a 3.1 per cent increase in vehicle volumes to 50,596 units.
Overall the port handled a record 6.71 million TEU in 2017, surpassing the previous high-water mark of 6.37 million TEU set in 2015 by 5.3 per cent.
