Frankfurt retains top spot as Europe's busiest cargo airport

Frankfurt Airport's operator Fraport handled 2.2 million tonnes of cargo during 2017, a year-on-year increase of 3.8 per cent that made the airport Europe's busiest for air freight traffic.
In February Fraport saw 163,121 tonnes of cargo pass through its gates, up 2.2 per cent against the same month last year.
From a financial standpoint, combined revenues across the group rose by 13.5 per cent in 2017 to EUR2.93 billion (US$3.596 billion).
Increased earnings from the group's ground services division (which includes cargo handling) had a positive effect on overall revenues, rising by EUR8.1 million in comparison to 2016, reported London's Air Cargo News.
The annual report said: "The global economy, which has recently been growing more dynamically, and reinvigorated global trade have given additional impetus to the German economy, which is aligned towards exports.
"As a result, German exports have improved significantly since the end of 2016 despite the dampening effect on demand that came from the appreciation of the euro against most other currencies. Consequently, there was high demand for air freight in Frankfurt."
In particular, Fraport noted "dynamic growth" in transatlantic volumes at Frankfurt in 2017, after the drop in tonnage suffered in 2016.
Fraport forecasts its overall revenue to reach EUR3.1 billion in fiscal year 2018 and cargo volumes at Frankfurt to increase by one per cent over 2017.
Ranking second and third for cargo among Fraport's gateways in 2017 were Lima Airport (a slight fall of 1.4 per cent to 283,702 tonnes) and Xin Airport (up 11.2 per cent to 259,883 tonnes).
