Germany Sees no Cause to Resume Toll Talks

BERLIN – German Transport Minister Manfred Stolpe said on Friday hopeful comments from DaimlerChrysler were not sufficient to revive talks about launching a highway truck toll system the minister axed on Tuesday. "That is not sufficient to consider seriously whether one resumes talks with this partner," Stolpe told reporters. "Until now, there's nothing on the table... But we are not nailing the door shut," he added. The government said on Tuesday it would cancel the contract with Toll Collect, the toll operator jointly owned by automaker DaimlerChrysler, phone company Deutsche Telekom and France's Cofiroute after the two sides failed to agree on new terms for a launch. Juergen Schrempp, the chief executive of DaimlerChrysler, said on Thursday he still hoped an agreement to launch a troubled road toll system could be resuscitated. "During the next 10 days we must come to a joint solution," Schrempp said at the company's annual results news conference. /Source: Reuters
