Konecranes Noell launches hybrid straddle carrier

  14.09.2018

At a celebration marking the 50th anniversary of straddle carrier production in Würzburg, Konecranes Noell announced a new hybrid machine, a new separating twin lift spreader and its Tier V engine option.
Konecranes Noell celebrated its “50th Straddiversary” this week with a gala dinner and its 13th straddle carrier symposium in Würzburg, Germany, the historic home of the Noell straddle carrier business. Having produced over 3,300 straddle carriers to date, Konecranes Noell has now launched a hybrid machine with a diesel electric genset and a lithium ion battery.
Incorporating a 69 kWh lithium ion battery has enabled Konecranes Noell to reduce the size of the diesel engine to 129kW, using a four cylinder 5.1 litre Mercedes/MTU 4R 1000 engine. This engine is a smaller version of the Mercedes 6R1100 Konecranes Noell fits to its diesel electric, non-hybrid, machine.
With its smaller engine and lithium ion battery the new NSC EHY (EHY for electric hybrid) delivers the same operational speeds and performance as the standard Konecranes Noell diesel electric straddle carrier. The diesel engine has two modes, a low-rpm mode for powering ancillaries and the telescoping system, and normal speed, when the engine operates at a constant RPM to optimise fuel consumption. The hybrid drive is fully integrated, and the machine cannot operate on diesel power alone.
Elsewhere the NSC EHY is the same as the standard diesel electric machine, with the same lower frame and wheel assemblies, leg girders, spreader, top frame and engine mounting frame. The battery pack is mounted in a composite housing outside the main portal, where the exhaust muffler system is normally mounted. This unit has been relocated to the main engine frame, taking advantage of the space created by the smaller diesel engine.
Despite the differences the hybrid machine weights about the same as a diesel electric - using a smaller diesel engine saves around 500kg in weight, which is offset by the battery and an extra inverter in the drive.
There are still questions about how lithium ion batteries will really perform over time, but Hubert Foltys, Director Business Line Straddle Carriers at Konecranes Noell said it evaluated several options and worked with its supplier, Scaba, on simulations and benchmark tests. It has confidence the battery system can achieve a lifecycle of 10 years or 50,000 hours.
Konecranes Noell has produced the first two units, both one-over-three models that will go into service with HHLA at Hamburg. HHLA worked closely with Konecranes Noell on the development, supplying data from its existing fleet that Konecranes used to size the hybrid system for the duty cycle at a highly productive terminal.
At this stage Konecranes is not giving figures for fuel savings or a projected fuel consumption figure, but fuel consumption is expected to be below the 16 litres per hour average for the Konecranes Noell NSC ECO EcoCAP system.
Konecranes Noell also displayed its new separating twin spreader, the NTS 62 X, which has the ability to separate two 20ft containers under the spreader by up to five feet. With a new drive system that uses hydraulic cylinders and has no mechanical locking pins for pre-set positions, the spreader can move each container independently.
Finally Konecranes Noell also showed customers the Mercedes/MTU “combined SCR and DPF Box” it will be using to meet the Euro V emissions standard. This combines the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems in one exhaust after treatment enclosure. WorldCargo News
