Ontario airport cargo increases 17pc to 610,000 tons in 10 months

Steady gains in cargo volumes continued in October at Ontario International Airport (ONT), putting the Inland Empire airport on pace to post double digit freight volumes, reports Markets Insider.
Ontario's air cargo business increased 14 per cent year on year in October to 66,000 tons. From January through October, it grew 17 per cent year on year to 610,000 tons.
ONT sits in the heart of the largest outgoing freight market in the United States. According to a recent report by New York's FreightWaves, the Ontario market has surpassed Atlanta for the No 1 position.
ONT also welcomed more than five million air travellers this year, the highest number in a decade.
Arriving and departing passengers totalled more than 455,000 last month, an increase of nearly 32.6 per cent from October a year ago.
The number included almost 434,000 domestic passengers, 8.3 per cent higher than October 2017. And the number of international travellers more than doubled to 21,000.
Said Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) CEO Mark Thorpe: "With strong demand for air service, particularly in the Los Angeles area, airlines and air travellers are recognising Ontario's ability to deliver a hassle-free, customer-friendly experience."
ONT is 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the centre of Southern California. It is a full-service airport with nonstop commercial jet service to 19 major airports in the US, Mexico and Taiwan, and connecting service to many domestic and international destinations.
There are 67 daily departures offered by nine air carriers. OIAA was formed in August 2012 by City of Ontario and the County of San Bernardino to serve of the airport's four-county catchment area.
