Busiest import January in Port of Oakland's history, trade war cited

The Port of Oakland's January container volume increased 0.6 per cent year on year to 75,350 TEU, the port authority revealed.
Oakland was only one of the three major US west coast ports to have January containerised export volume increase. The port's containerised imports grew nine per cent to 81,895 TEU and its total volume increased by 3.2 per cent to 212,496 TEU.
Oakland said it was the busiest January for imports in the port's history and pointed to two developments in Asia, its largest market, that influenced the January import surge.
"US shippers rushed imports into the country due to lingering concern about future Chinese tariff increases. Importers also tried to stock up in advance of annual Lunar New Year factory shutdowns in Asia," the port said.
Said Oakland port maritime director John Driscoll: "Concern over international trade issues has driven unprecedented import volume. We're watching closely to see what happens next."
