Qatar's top ports register stellar growth in February


Qatar's ports achieved robust growth in cargo volumes in February, after the ports of Hamad, Doha and Ruwais handled 83,091 tonnes of general cargo, compared to 46,764 tonnes in January, representing a month-on-month increase of 78 per cent.
The three ports handled 99,777 TEU containers in total and 5,443 vehicles in February.
The movement of building materials was also strong as the ports handled 36,014 tonnes of such materials in February, up 17 per cent compared to January's 30,693 tonnes, reported Qatar's The Peninsula.
They handled 101,104 heads of livestock in February against 71,896 heads in January, registering growth of 41 per cent. A total of 332 vessels called at these three ports in February, according to Mwani Qatar data.
Hamad port, one of the largest in the region, was a major driver of growth for country's maritime sector. In February, 131 vessels called at Hamad port delivering 99,481 TEU, 75,643 tonnes of break bulk cargo, 80,311 heads of cattle and 5317 vehicles.
Hamad port also witnessed a huge spike in vessel and cargo movements in 2018 after handling 1.33 million TEU, one million tonnes of break bulk cargo, 255,000 of bulk cargo, 68,000 vehicles and 400,000 heads of livestock.
