Rhine's water may be too low for shipping - last year, it was too high

Germany's Rhine River could be impassable to ships this summer if Europe has another drought, that's becoming more likely with the threat of global warming, reports Bloomberg. If it is of any comfort, Reuters reported in January 2018, that there were widespread fears that last year's high water would prevent ships passing under bridges.
Last year's high water closed the river for 80 kilometres from Maxau near Karlsruhe to a point south of Mannheim, preventing shipping to and from Switzerland, said Reuters.
But this year Bloomberg reports the opinion of German and Swiss scientists who say that heavy snowfalls in the alpine regions at the river's source are no guard against a repeat of low river levels, which blocked a key choke-point in October.
