HAROPA cargo up 5.1pc, boxes rise 4pc to 1.2 million TEU in 5 months

HAROPA, the amalgam of the ports of Le Havre, Rouen and Paris, posted a 5.1 per cent first five months of year-on-year seaborne trade to 40 million tonnes, reports the American Journal of Transportation.
This growth can be explained by the momentum of container, dry bulk and liquid bulk trades. River traffic alone increased 55 per cent, HAROPA statistics revealed.
Container volume was up four per cent in the first five months to 1.2 million TEU, with box tonnage rising four per cent to with 12 million tonnes.
This follows a record April throughput, the best container month in five years. This rise is mainly carried in Le Havre by the hinterland traffic, which rose 3.2 per cent and especially hinterland full container traffic, up 2.4 per cent year on year.
Transshipment traffic also increased 10 per cent, a rise explained by the development of the shipping services offered by HAROPA within the framework of shipping alliances.
Add to this, the increase of the number of feeder services, as well as by the rising strength of the multimodal traffic. There were also continuous rise in volume at the multimodal terminal in Le Havre that handled 32,000 TEU from January to April a 12 per cent increase.
