Hapag-Lloyd buys 13,420 refrigerated boxes for perishables, pharma

German shipping line Hapag-Lloyd has placed orders for 13,420 new refrigerated containers, expanding its fleet size to 100,000 units.
The order comprises 970 TEU and 12,450 FEU with production due to commence this month. Delivery of the first batch of containers will start in November, in time for the start of the harvest season for many southern hemisphere crops, reported American Shipper.
The company said the containers will be mainly be used for transporting fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, cherries and avocados from Chile, Peru and elsewhere, plus fish and meat. Pharmaceuticals and blood plasma will also be loaded into the reefer boxes.
With this new order, senior director of container steering Niklas Ohling said the carrier will have at its disposal "100,000 state-of-the-art refrigerated containers with a total capacity of 210,000 TEU, some of which will be equipped with the latest controlled atmosphere technology, which slows the ripening process during transport, thereby extending shelf life."
