Gujarat's Surat airport to open new air freight terminal shortly by AAI

The new modular cargo terminal located at Surat International Airport in the state of Gujarat will be officially opened by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) within the coming two weeks.
The cargo terminal is a steel-based structure constructed on the land between air traffic control (ATC) and the terminal building. The ground and first floors of the terminal each cover an area of 1,000 square metres. The terminal includes a cold storage facility for the export of perishable items and a strong room.
Surat airport handled 3,400 tonnes of domestic cargo over the past 12 months thanks to private airlines, operating out of the airport, providing cargo facilities.
Official sources said that cargo items like textiles and apparel, courier, chemicals, valuable goods like diamonds and jewellery are transported from Surat airport to various destinations, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and Jaipur, reported New Delhi's Times of India.
Most cargo movement to and from Surat airport is handled by SpiceJet followed by Air India. SpiceJet is the only airline capable of handling valuable goods such as jewellery and diamonds.
South Gujarat has an agro and aqua export potential of 35,000 tonnes per annum for mangoes, chikoo, roses, gerbera and shrimp etc. Polished diamonds are directly exported via the Surat Hira Bourse (SHB) customs house to Mumbai and worldwide. Likewise, there is an export potential for polyester fabric and hosiery of 2,000 tonnes per annum.
