Genoa port handles record 241,466 TEU in June

Italy's major seaport, the Port of Genoa, handled a record 241,466 TEU in June, the highest number ever recorded in a single month, confirming the recovery trend recorded in the second quarter of 2019 which saw a 2.7 per cent volume increase over the same period of 2018, after a weak start to the year.
In the first six months of 2019, container movements were 1.33 million TEU, a decrease of 1.2 per cent on 2018 and 45,000 TEU more than in 2017 (+3.4 per cent), reports PortSEurope, Austria.
At the level of individual terminals, the month of June was particularly good for the PSA Genoa Pra terminal, which handled 152,566 TEU, up 20,000 TEU on June 2018 (+15.7 per cent) and increasing 8.2 per cent compared to 2017.
The SECH terminal was also positive, handling 28,880 TEU (+36.6 per cent), and Genoa Port Terminal, which totalled 34,566 TEU (+2.8 per cent). The transshipment quota remains in line with that of 2018, with 12.7 per cent on total traffic.
Autorita di Sistema Portuale del Mar Ligure Occidentale (AdSP - Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority) chairman Paolo Emilio Signorini said that the result achieved assumed an even greater importance if it is framed in the context of uncertainty of the international economy and to tensions between China and the United States, which sees a general slowdown in trade on the routes for the Far East.
"Our port has been able to react effectively to post-bridge difficulties, convincing large operators to increase its presence in Genoa: among the last Hapag-Lloyd AG with the directional centre for Southern Europe and ONE with its services to Asia, the Americas and the Mediterranean.
"Thanks to the investments underway by global players such as PSA, MSC, Maersk and Cosco, we are confident that the ports of our port system are returning to the path of constant growth interrupted by the collapse of the bridge," adds Mr Signorini.
The Genoa Morandi bridge collapsed last year with the death of 43 people and affecting traffic using the port.
