Tanjung Pelepas port welcomes world's largest box ship

Malaysia's port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has accommodated the world's biggest containership, the 23,756 TEU MSC Gulsun, on her maiden voyage. The 400-metre-long and 61.5-metre-wide ship departed from PTP with a record load of 19,574 TEU, topping the previous record of 19,284 TEU set earlier this year.
The MSC Gulsun is deployed on an Asia-Europe service operated by the 2M shipping alliance. She was delivered to Mediterranean Shipping Company in early July. PTP marked her first port call in Southeast Asia, after previously berthing in Yantian, China. Her next port call is Algeciras in Spain.
The ship is the first from a batch of six 23,000 TEU-class units ordered by MSC in September 2017. The carrier has another five such vessels on order at Samsung Heavy Industries, while an additional five would be built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), reported World Maritime News.
While MSC set a precedent for the arrival of this new class of gigantic box ship, the company has been outdone by Hyundai Merchant Marine's order for 12 such vessels with a combined capacity of 276,000 TEU, according vesselsValue data.
PTP is a joint venture between MMC Group and APM Terminals.
