Vietnam's container throughput hits a record 12.93m TEU in 2018

Ports in Vietnam handled a record total of 12,930,071 TEU in 2018, representing growth of eight per cent compared to 2017, data from the Vietnam Seaports Association (VPA) shows.
Ports located in the nation's south handled 9,610,321 TEU, reflecting a year-over-year volume increase of 10.9 per cent and market share of 74 per cent. Ports in the north saw box throughput in 2018 rise by 1.8 per cent to 2,822,416 TEU.
On the other hand, ports in central Vietnam suffered a decrease of 5.2 per cent, after handling 497,384 TEU last year. The volume of containers moving to and from Mekong River Delta ports was down one per cent to 73,096 TEU, reported Hellenic Shipping News.
As for ports in southern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City/Dong Nai combined handled 6,590,754 TEU, up seven per cent. Containers traffic to and from Ba Ria-Vung Tau, which hosts large containerships deployed on east-west routes, grew by 20.8 per cent to 2,946,471 TEU.
Ho Chi Minh City/Dong Nai, Cat Lai, which is run by Saigon Newport Corporation, handled 4,721,277 TEU, up 5.8 per cent year on year. Container throughput at Ben Nghe soared by 13.6 per cent to 313,895 TEU. Container traffic to and from Vietnam International Container Terminals (VICT), in which Mitsui & Co has a stake, rose 3.3 per cent to 579,786 TEU. In contrast, throughput at Saigon plummeted 46.4 per cent to 171,730 TEU.
