Black Sea Container market volume up 8.52pc in first half of 2019


Black Sea container terminals in the Ukraine, Romania, Russia and Bulgaria increased first half throughput 8.5 per cent year on year to 1,582.932 TEU in laden boxes, reported Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide.
The laden turnover increase was in all countries of the Black Sea region, except Romania. In H1 2019, the highest growth was achieved by Georgia and Ukraine - 30.6 per cent and 17.8 per cent respectively.
During this period, 57.5 per cent of full containers handled were imported, while 42.4 per cent of the volume was exported. It is estimated that laden container share was 74.3 per cent and empty container share was 25.6 per cent.
Export volumes increased by 6.13 per cent, with the Ukraine up 17.6 per cent. Georgia was up 14.2 per cent, Bulgaria increased 4.1 per cent and Russia went up three per cent. But Romania fell 4.9 per cent year on year.
Imports to the region increased. 10.3 per cent, mainly because of growth Georgia (+33.1 per cent), Ukraine (+18.1 per cent) and Bulgaria (+14.8 per cent). Romania also enjoyed a 7.9 per cent import gain, but Russia's laden imports decreased 8.7 per cent.
