Panama Canal finalises new toll structure modification after consultation

The Panama Canal Authority has finalised its modified toll structure to further incentivise its Containership Loyalty Programme to increase volumes through the waterway, according to Shipping Gazette.
Proposed tolls modifications were announced on June 14, which initiated a 30-day consultation period ending with public hearings on July 24.
There will be a new rate for vessels carrying containers on deck, which do not belong to the container shipping segment, allowing for differentiated charges for containers that are empty, dry or refrigerated.
There will be modified tolls for vehicle carriers and ro-ro ships based on revised the vessel capacity ranges to clearly differentiate the current fleet.
Based on the recommendations received, the tolls presented in the original proposal were adjusted for neopanamax vessels.
Tankers, chemical tankers, LPG and LNG vessel toll structures remain unchanged, but tolls adjustments were approved to more closely align with the value of the route.
Matched dry bulk tolls will be charged to neopanamax vessels carrying iron ore with the tolls assessed for grains and "other dry bulk" cargoes. This includes a tariff increase for neopanamax dry bulkers transiting in ballast.
