ÖBB Rail Cargo Group awarded silver status for CSR measures by EcoVadis

  14.11.2019

The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is one of the leading rail logistics companies in Europe. Every year, it transports 113 million tonnes of goods safely, punctually and in an environmentally friendly manner. As a competent partner for freight transport by rail and an economic driving force, ÖBB RCG sets targeted economic, environmentally conscious and social accents. For them, responsible corporate action is in harmony with the environment and society. EcoVadis has now awarded the CSR status "Silver" for this.
Climate protection is one of the greatest global challenges for the coming decades. The transport market in Europe is expected to grow by 30% by 2030. Shifting traffic to rail is therefore the most important lever for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Even if ÖBB RCG's business model is already sustainable per se, the more industrial customers rely on rail logistics solutions and the more goods that travel by rail, the better for the environment. ÖBB RCG lives up to its responsibility by investing in safety, flexible rail logistics and a variety of other tasks that go beyond mobility. As an employer, the railway logistics specialist relies on employees who combine performance with passion. Much is being done to achieve this. ÖBB RCG is not only one of the largest training companies, it also sets standards in the area of training and further education and the promotion of talents and managers. This not only invests in young people, but also in the future and in an attractive employer. But the railway logistics company goes one step further: its business partners are also selected on the basis of criteria that not only support the corporate philosophy, but also place the same value on it.

Measures that are noticeable

EcoVadis, an international rating platform that now assesses 50,000 companies in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), has now awarded this responsible approach the status of "Silver". The rating included topics relating to the environment, labour and human rights, corporate ethics as well as sustainable procurement. ÖBB RCG was particularly impressed with the newly developed TransANT platform wagon. The 20% lighter undercarriage not only enables more volume per transport with the same axle load, but thanks to the revolutionary technology fewer trains per year will be required for the same transport volume compared to standard cars. This saves energy and thus reduces emissions. The conversion of freight wagons to low-noise braking systems, which reduce noise emissions, was also convincing. In addition, ÖBB RCG scored well in the area of labour and human rights with its employee offers relating to health and diversity as well as childcare and measures to better reconcile family and career. The anti-corruption training courses, the roll-out of the performance partner evaluation and the registration modalities in the online portal were also rated positively.

Rail Cargo Group: Freight traffic of the ÖBB

The Rail Cargo Group is one of the leading rail logistics companies in Europe with annual sales of 2.3 billion euros and 8,500 employees. Together with strong partners, the Rail Cargo Group offers a comprehensive network of end-to-end-logistics in Europe and far beyond to Asia. It connects European conurbations and ports with prosperous economic centers in Russia, Turkey and all the way to China. The Rail Cargo Group's lead operating company is Rail Cargo Austria AG.

ÖBB: Austria’s largest mobility service provider

As a comprehensive mobility service provider, the ÖBB group takes 474 million passengers and 113 million tons of goods to their destinations annually in an environmentally friendly manner. Rail passengers travel in a way that is especially good for the environment, since 100 percent of our traction current comes from renewable energy sources. In 2018, ÖBB was one of the most punctual rail companies in Europe with around 96 percent punctuality. Group-wide, 41,600 employees in rail and bus and around 2,000 trainees ensure that around 1.3 million passengers arrive safely at their destination each day. ÖBB-Holding AG is the strategic parent company of the Group.
