Long Beach port sees box volume drop 2.4pc

The US Port of Long Beach (PoLB) handled 688,425 TEU in October, representing a decrease of 2.4 per cent compared to the same month last year when the port set new container throughput records.
October exports rose by 9.8 per cent, while imports fell by 7.4 per cent and shipment volumes of empty containers overseas dipped by 0.8 per cent, reported Long Beach Business Journal.
During the first 10 months of 2019, overall cargo volumes declined by 5.4 per cent year on year.
"As the trade war lingers, these tariffs continue to impact the US economy and have created uncertainty for the business of importers and exporters," PoLB executive director Mario Cordero stated.
"We are hopeful for a prompt resolution of the tariff situation between the US and China. In the meantime, we are moving forward with capital improvements that should bring long-term growth."
