Melbourne port's 30-year plan calls for upgrades

  29.11.2019

The Port of Melbourne's draft 30-year Port Development Strategy 2050 that has been published for consultation has won the support of the Victorian Transport Association (VTA), according to Shipping Gazette.
Proposed changes to the port's existing facilities and land use by 2050 include: upgrading and developing the rail network and terminals at Swanson dock to increase rail freight.
Development of a new Webb Dock Freight Link and associated rail terminals to further grow the volume of trade transported by rail into and out of the port. The upgrade of the existing Swanson dock and Webb dock container berths to handle larger container vessels of 10,500 to 14,000 TEU.
The expansion of existing container terminal capacity at Webb dock; the relocation of Tasmanian trade to Appleton and Victoria docks to support continued container trade growth.
Plus, expanding the use of South Wharf for dry bulk trades, particularly cement and gypsum which are heavily used within Melbourne's building construction sector; and integrating the former Melbourne wholesale market site in the Dynon precinct into the port's operations to increase the volume of port trade handled by rail.
"The adoption of new and emerging technologies to improve freight vehicle and commercial vessel productivity and efficiency is also a significant ongoing opportunity considered within the 2050 PDS," the study was cited as stating in a report by ATN.
