Philly airport awarded top-up grant

  04.12.2019

Pensylvania's Multimodal Transportation Fund will provide US$1.4 million of a $15.7 million project to move a mile-long road that now bisects Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and impedes cargo flow.
PHL only has nine per cent of the $50 billion Greater Philadelphia air cargo volume. The relocation of the Tinicum Island Road is expected to change that, according to the West Cargo Development Plan, reports London's Air Cargo News.
"Last year, PHL moved more than 555,000 tonnes of cargo, which was a 15 per cent increase over 2017. To keep this momentum, we must increase our cargo handling capabilities," said PHL chief executive Rochelle Cameron.
PHL also received two state grants, totalling $924,900, to rehabilitate platforms and canopies at its four stops on the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority's Airport Line.
The Airport Regional Rail Line stops provides 2.1 million annual trips to and from PHL, with trains accessing all terminals. The funding will provide upgrades without impacting service, the airport said.
