Wilmington is honoured as most productive small N America port

North Carolina Ports' port of Wilmington has been named the most productive small port and Wilmington's Container Terminal the most productive terminal facility in North America at a Journal of Commerce awards ceremony.
The awards were presented during the Port Performance North America Conference in Newark, New Jersey.
The rankings were determined by evaluating data on overall berth productivity, defined as total container moves per hour while a ship is at berth, reported The Maritime Executive.
"At a time when North Carolina Ports is expanding rapidly, receiving this recognition could not have come at a more opportune time," said North Carolina Ports chief operating officer Brian Clark. "This award supports our value proposition of being the most efficient and cost-effective option for our customers."
North Carolina Ports is currently in the midst of a US$200 million infrastructure improvement programme at the port of Wilmington. Improvements include a wider turning basin, berth enhancements, new cranes and an overhaul of the container terminal to double the port's annual throughput capacity to 1.2 million TEU and triple its refrigerated container capacity to 1,000 reefer plugs.
North Carolina Ports executive director Paul Cozza added: "Terminal enhancements will allow North Carolina Ports to maintain best-in-class landside and waterside efficiencies and better meet the needs of our expanding customer base as we continue to grow."
