Wind energy technique Sky-Sails

Beluga Shipping, Bremen is the first shipping company worldwide to make use of the new wind energy technique Sky-Sails.
The sales contract for the system, which reduces bunker consumption by 50%, was signed in Hamburg this week. According to the managing director of Sky-Sails Mr. Stephan Wrage, some 40 000 vessels could be quipped with their system. By 2013 they expect to have a market share of 1.3%. So far the real test on the freighter has not been made. But Niels Stolberg, owner of Beluga is convinced that the trials made last September have proven the success of Sky-Sails. “With normal wind forces a cargo vessel could save 3-4 tons bunker per day,” he said. At bunker prices of US$ 1200 daily it would mean enormous savings.
The system in principle is a large glider umbrella which is connected to the vessel and drives the ship with the help of a steering gondola which moves the sail in the optimal position. After the first Beluga vessel will be equipped next year, production will commence by 2008. The Oltmann Group, Bremen will finance the project. So far they have collected 2,9 million EUR already. Additional 8 million EUR should be acquired by 2008.
