Renault Trucks has teamed-up with Goodyear for the world’s toughest test of tire endurance - the 2007 Lisbon – Dakar Rally. Goodyear is to supply tires featuring its very latest puncture-resistant Duraseal Technology. These will provide grip and reliability for the two Renault Kerax ‘works’ support vehicles, which take care of the repair and maintenance of the competing Renault trucks. The event, which crosses the Sahara desert, covers almost 9,000 kilometers in 16 days.
To ensure the greatest possible reliability across the punishing route, Goodyear is putting Duraseal Technology into its Goodyear Offroad ORD 14.00R20 tires, which will be fitted on the Renault Kerax 6x6 all terrain vehicles. Duraseal Technology is a unique Goodyear-patented feature that, thanks to a built-in sealant, stops air escaping if an object of up to 6 mm diameter penetrates the tread and even if the object is removed. It can eliminate costly vehicle downtime, which can be wasted changing a flat, and also can reduce the risk of having to replace tires that have been driven under-inflated.
Renault Trucks is no stranger to the benefits that Duraseal Technology offers, as it is the first manufacturer to offer Duraseal-equipped tires to its customers. The company’s new Renault Kerax construction truck is available with 13R22.5 Goodyear Omnitrac MSS steer tires and Omnitrac MSD drive tires, both featuring Duraseal Technology.
Earlier this year, Renault equipped one of its Kerax support trucks with Goodyear tires for the first time on the 2006 Lisbon - Dakar Rally, with excellent results. Running in parallel with the entrants, Renault Trucks ran two Renault Kerax service trucks, one of which was shod with Goodyear Offroad ORD tires. Effectively workshops on wheels and run by a team of six people, these 6x6 trucks followed the event, stopping at the service area of each stage.
Not only did they assist the Renault Trucks entrants but also supported any vehicle that hit problems en route. Twelve Kerax trucks were involved in the rally in the T4 category for trucks over 3.5 tonnes built for rough terrain as standard. Euromilhões Dakar 2007, the rally’s official title, starts from Lisbon on January 6 and finishes in Dakar on January 21. For 2007, 525 teams from 42 countries have entered the event, which is the 29th to be held.
