Mumbai Port handled a record 7,611 tonnes of steel pipes at Berth No. 19/20 ID on December 5 from the vessel m.v. Lucas Oldendorff under the agency of Forbes Gokak Ltd.
The performance follows the earlier single-day discharge record set by the Port on November 19 when 6,603 tonnes of bulk wheat were handled, Exim News Service reported.
According to a Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) release, the performance of m.v. Lucas Oldendorff is the highest single ship day output in respect of full load steel pipe consignment vessels.
It was made possible due to the concerted efforts of Forbes Gokak Ltd, gear contractor Sea Global Services and transporter Damania Shipping.
The cargo was consigned to Reliance Industries, who were importing 3.58 lakh tonnes of steel pipes for a major gas line project. Of this, 1.5 lakh tonnes have already been moved through the Port.
Another record was created at the Port, at Haji Bunder, where 17,200 tonnes of thermal coal in bulk, consigned to the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB), was handled on December 9 from the barges of m.v. Maritime Dignity.
This is the highest tonnage of coal in bulk handled in a ship day at the Port so far by Coastal Energy Pvt. Ltd, the release highlighted.
Mumbai Port has adequate facilities for handling all types of cargo, with berths available for direct berthing on arrival and adequate storage space provided in the immediate vicinity of the berths/ship in the docks as also in the outlying areas.
Mr V. Ranganath, Traffic Manager of MbPT, is confident that the additional efforts being put in by the Port personnel, with the active involvement and cooperation of Port users, will see the Port achieving the throughput target of 49 million tonnes for 2006-07 set by the Union Ministry of Shipping.
