Bernama News Agency reported on Jan 8, 2007 that Westports Malaysia has reported the handling of 3.7 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containerized cargo as compared with 2.9 million TEUs in 2005. This is an impressive 26 percent growth in the one year period. The growth was attributed to a strong showing in imports and exports trade where for the first time, the port recorded the handling of more than a million boxes.
The port's container throughput in 2006 accounted for 58 percent of Port Klang's total turnover and 28 percent of the country's total. Westports has set a target to handle 4.2 million TEUs for 2007 with the eventual growth
to 5 million TEUs by 2010.
Westports' achievement of 3.7 TEUs included 1.1 million TEUs of local boxes - which in turn reflected a growth of 13 percent compared with 949,000 handled in 2005. In terms of transshipment activities, Westports recorded a 31 percent growth from 1.8 million TEUs in 2005 to 2.3 million TEUs in 2006 with the
expectation to grow 10 percent as more and more cargo from Indonesia and South Asia make direct calls or use this port to transship.
On a quarterly basis, Westports recorded 963,662 TEUs in the last quarter, the highest quarterly achievement in 2006 compared with 767,838 during the same period in 2005. It also surpassed last year's third quarter accomplishment of 954,333 TEUs.
Westports today has 25 Main Line Operators and 27 Feeder Operators calling there, and linking 300 ports around the world.
