New technology adds seats to Finnair Airbus aircraft

Finnair’s Airbus A320 aircraft are to be fitted with new light structure seating that makes it possible to add as many as 15 seats to configurations.
The Recaro Slimline CL3510 seating model uses new technology with a light build and modern design making it possible to maintain plentiful leg room even though the seats are closer together. As a result of this extra seating, Finnair’s capacity on European and domestic routes will be increased by five per cent. Another significant effect of the lighter seating will be savings in fuel consumption worth almost a million euros a year.
“This is an improvement in both environmental and economic terms,” says Miko Perho, Senior Vice President, Finnair’s Commercial Division. “We can increase our offering without adding flight frequencies while maintaining the same degree of comfort as before.”
Finnair operates three kinds of Airbus A320 family aircraft. The seating capacity on the A321 type will grow to 196 and on A320s to 159. The change will cut the overall weight of the A320, for instance, by 850 kg, and lowers carbon-dioxide emissions by nearly ten percent.
Installation of the new seats has begun on part of the fleet, and it’s anticipated that all A321s and A320s will be fitted with the seating by the end of August 2007. The new seats will be installed on the third type, the A319 at a later date.
